Slacker Radio Widget Now Available for MySpace

Slacker, the online radio provider, has launched a MySpace widget that lets you insert a radio station onto your profile.

With this widget offering, you can choose an existing station or create a custom station to play on your MySpace page. The widget will display artist info for songs it plays. One of the larger benefits is of course the ability to play a much larger selection of music on your profile than you’d otherwise have through MySpace.

The option to embed the Slacker player on another website is not promoted, on Slacker’s site or on the widget, either. You’ll need to go to the player’s options to find the “Add to MySpace” button, where the embed code is provided. While you have the option of placing the player on any supporting website, a one-click add option for MySpace and perhaps a few other major networks would be helpful as well.

Beware the dangers unblock MySpace

With more and more libraries, schools and businesses, blocking MySpace, what’s a MySpace junkie to do? Well there are ways of accessing MySpace on computers where it is blocked, but beware, it could be extremely dangerous.

With a circumventor or proxy server you type in the URL you would like to visit, but instead of the web site appearing in its own Window, it appears as content in the proxy server’s window. As far as the computer is concerned, it’s as though you’re visiting the proxy web server site, not the blocked site.

I had a look at a number of proxy web servers including Vtunnel, Poxy v1, and ProxySpin.com.

The big problem with these sites is that if they are run by unscrupulous web masters, they could be used to steal your login password. For that reason, while you could use these kinds of sites to view MySpace, I don’t recommend that you actually log into your account.

The other problem is that these sites can get blocked as well. And if you a site such as Proxy v1 starts appearing on the network logs, you can be sure that the network administrator will soon start blocking it. Some administrators block all sites containing the term network. Having said that, typing “MySpace proxy server” into Google brings up hundreds of alternatives.

Hacker's MySpace profile deleted

Las Vegas - By the time Rick Deacon was finished showing hackers in Las Vegas how to take over MySpace profile pages, he was evicted from the social networking website and the weakness fixed.

The United States college student uncovered a MySpace vulnerability months ago and shared his discovery at DefCon, the largest gathering of computer hackers in the world.

"In retrospect..."
"Obviously they weren't happy about it," Deacon said after he finished his presentation, checked his email and saw a message from MySpace telling him his account was deleted for "violating terms of service."

"In retrospect, I should have used a dummy account."

Deacon's attack relied on duping MySpace users into clicking rigged links, perhaps in online forums or bulletin boards, which routed them to a file that steals passwords and identifying information stored in software "cookies."

Hackers could take control of users' profiles and use them as springboards for more attacks or to infect users' computers with viruses, according to Deacon.

"It's fixed now as far as I can tell," Deacon told AFP. "I'm actually proud of them for finally patching it."

Deacon said he created a new MySpace account but has no plans to hunt for a new way to hack the website.

"If you talk to them, tell them I'm sorry," Deacon said. "I'll keep my new MySpace account as what it should be, a place for talking to my friends." - AFP

MySpace News: The Digg Killer?

MySpace is launching a news aggregator called MySpace News in the second quarter of 2007. It’ll rely on both algorithms and user rating - basically a combination of Google News and Digg. You’ll remember that Fox acquired the news aggregator NewRoo about a year ago, so it’s taken them a long time to get to the product stage. The feature list, via Terry Heaton:

*MySpace News takes News to a whole new level by dynamically aggregating real-time news and blogs from top sites around the Web
*Creates focused, topical news pages that users can interact and engage with throughout their day
*MySpace is making the news social, allowing users to:
-Rate and comment on every news item that comes through the system
-Submit stories they think are cool and even author pieces from their MySpace blog
* MySpace users previously had to leave the site to find comprehensive news, gossip, sporting news, etc. With MySpace News, we bring the news to them!

It’s kind of obvious when you think about it: a news company launching a news site. Not many details yet, but you can’t deny this will be a game changer. Like Google News, they’ll be aggregating news sources from around the web - that could raise the same issues that YouTube and MySpace video are facing: do the other newspapers really want News Corp to package their news? Of course they don’t.

It’ll also be interesting to see what the MySpace demographic selects as the most important news of the day: just like Digg users focus on Apple, the RIAA, Google and how awesome Digg is, we can probably expect MySpace users to talk about celebrity news and other mainstream, lowest common denominator stuff. I call this a win for the celebrity blogs, if they can seek inclusion.

Perhaps MySpace news will succeed where NooZ failed - NooZ, you’ll remember, tried to build a “Digg for MySpace users”, but failed to target the content to that demographic. I wonder if we’ll also be seeing MySpace News Widgets to post to your profile, “MySpace This” buttons, and the “MySpace effect”. Interesting develop

MySpace invite turned family home into bomb site

An English teenager whose house was trashed after she posted a party invite on MySpace has blamed computer hackers for the gatecrashing debacle.

A 17 year old from Houghton-le-Spring, near Sunderland, took advantage of her parents being away over Easter to invite a few friends – say 60, plus DJs – to an informal get together at the family home, according to reports.

Being a modern kind of a girl, she informed her friends via MySpace. Her page, which has now been removed, apparently warned potential attendees that booze would probably run out quick so “bring more drink” as well as “squirty cream”.

Well, it was inevitable…apparently coachloads of aimless youth turned up from as far away as London. Accoring to www.thisislondon.com, by the next morning gatecrashers had filled the bath with the family’s crockery, the shower with empty booze bottles, urinated on her mother’s wedding dress and dyed her younger brother’s clothes, which they’d deemed chavvy. Damage has been put at around £20,000.

Apparently the shamed hostess has yet to return home, while her family are seeking alternative temporary accommodation.

London’s Evening Standard tracked down the now extremely repentant teen, who explained that her MySpace page had been hijacked by the cyber gatecrashers, who’d changed her innocent original invite to a few friends – well, 60 - to a call to trash an “average family sized house” in a bacchanalian style rout.

The hacking claim has been met with incredulity from posters on bulletin boards, who asked why the girl hadn’t noticed the changes. The most cynical suggest the entire thing was cooked up as a launchpad to internet stardom via MySpace and YouTube.

If this was anyone's aim, it didn't work. A thorough search of YouTube reveals no footage of the party - even when we included the term "squirty cream". ®

Protect your Myspace from spam

Now MySpace.com has sued self-proclaimed spam king Scott Richter for allegedly using compromised user accounts to send millions unsolicited ads touting ringtones, polo shirts among other things. So how to protect your Myspace?

Here you can protect :-

Do you get complaints from your friends about spam bulletins that were sent in your name? Bad sign!

Check your “Sent” mail. Are there messages there that you did not send? Bad sign!

Do you see friends on your list that you did not add yourself? Bad sign!

Change your password: go to your “Account settings” and click “Change Password” (this reverses the effect of #2)

Clean out your profile: go to your “Edit Profile” page and clean out the “About Me”, “I’d like to meet”, “Interests”, … text boxes. (this reverses the effect of #3)

Don’t click on links in bulletins. Better still, don’t read your bulletins at all.

If you unexpectedly get a MySpace login screen, make sure the URL starts with http://login.myspace.com.

So if you use Myspace, use your head. Don’t download or install software from untrusted sources, even those apparently recommended by your friends (Washington Post)

Only become ‘friends’ with people you know or artists you know. This blonde chick from Houston with 5000 friends is dying to become your buddy? Chances are, “she” might actually look more like Onslow. If that is actually your type, forget I said that.

Go easy on the profile pimping. If you just take whatever HTML you get from some site and paste it in your profile, that’s like taking a drink from a stranger. Next thing you know you’re screwed.

Principal sues ex-students over MySpace profiles

A Pennsylvania school principal has filed a lawsuit against four former students, claiming they falsely portrayed him as a pot smoker, beer guzzler and pornography lover and sullied his reputation through mock MySpace profiles.

Eric Trosch was principal of Hickory High School in Hermitage, Penn., at the time the short-lived profiles went up on the popular social-networking site. He claims that the students committed defamation by posting three separate profiles bearing his name, official school portrait and a host of "unsubstantiated allegations, derogatory comments and false statements" about him, according to a complaint filed last month in Mercer County, Penn., civil court.

Each of the disputed sites, which went online during the course of one week in December 2005, was removed within days of its appearance after school officials contacted MySpace.com. Trosch has since become principal of Hermitage Middle School.

One profile, which the complaint claims was created by a student named Thomas Cooper, listed an unnamed pornographic flick as Trosch's favorite movie, according to the complaint. Another profile, allegedly posted by students Christopher and Brendan Gebhart, claimed he "liked to have sex with students and brutalize women." A third profile said he "kept a keg of beer behind his desk at school, was on steroids, and smoked marijuana," the court filing said.

The latter posting, which the complaint attributes to Justin Layshock, is already the subject of a federal lawsuit that has been wending its way through court since early last year.

Layshock--then a 17-year-old Hickory High School senior with a 3.3 GPA--and his parents sued Trosch and the Hermitage school district over the school's response to the incident. Its response included suspending him from school and placing him in an alternative education program that allegedly prevented him from progressing with his normal coursework. That complaint argues the school's actions were excessive, violated Layshock's First Amendment free-speech rights, and interfered with his parents' freedom to judge how best to raise and educate their son.

Friends come and go. Just because you added somebody as a friend on your myspace account does not mean they have to be there forever. Here is how to clean out those skeletons from your myspace closet. I'll show you by removing the infamous Tom.

Initially when I joined my space, I wanted attention. I added friends left and right. I added people I didn't know and didn't want to know. I just wanted to "power-up" my friends list.

No more! I am tired of all of these freaks on my friends list.

Here is how to delete a "friend" from your myspace account. I'll delete Tom from my myspace testing account for this example...

How to Download Songs from Myspace

It seems that someone found out a way to create download links to the mp3 files that one can listen to on the profile pages of the bands that have a myspace website. The script to decode the myspace url and extract the mp3 links is working well and uses Ajax for ease of use.

All you need to to is supply a website or profile page of a band and the script automatically decodes the information and displays links to all songs that can be listened to on the website. Myspace randomly generates the links every minute which means that sometimes the decode button has to be pressed more often than once.

The files hosted by MySpace are low quality (96kbps, 22kHz) and are intended for streaming only.

Please note, this thing works on Firefox 2.0.0.1 and Opera 9.02. and it doesn’t work on Internet Explorer 6 or 7. It will take few seconds before the Myspace songs are displayed, so be patient.

MySpace donates sex offender database to center

MySpace.com will donate a national computer database on U.S. sex offenders to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, the popular social-networking site said Monday.

Sex offender data is collected by individual state authorities. News Corp.'s MySpace and background verification company Sentinel Tech Holdings developed a technology that combines close to 50 U.S. state registries in an aim to help police keep track of an estimated 600,000 convicted sex offenders.

MySpace has increased efforts to block convicted adult sex predators from the site, which is a meeting place for a large population of teens attracted to the service to share photos, blogs, music and videos.

"We've come a long way from just the milk carton," NCMEC President and Chief Executive Ernie Allen said in a phone interview, referring to a longstanding program where pictures of abducted children appear on the side of milk cartons in the hope that a wider audience will recognize them.

MySpace struck a partnership with Sentinel in December to create the database and has been using it to identify, block or delete the accounts of known sex predators on its service, company executives said.

The database includes photo-matching software tools that can help authorities cross-reference photos or descriptions of predators against registered offenders, especially those who have failed to keep their registration up to date.

About 100,000 of the 600,000 offenders are so-called "non-compliant" cases, NCMEC's Allen said, making them difficult to track. A national database with the cooperation of authorities and businesses that operate online communities could help, he said.

Hemanshu Nigam, chief security officer at MySpace parent Fox Interactive Media, said the company was in discussions with other companies to use the database.

MySpace Isn't A Place for Young Kids
You may not have heard about the "secret" society called MySpace. Almost everyone in school has a MySpace page that lists everything about themselves and chances are your child has been encouraged to create one. T'weens are told how to bypass the rules so they can get a page even though they aren't old enough. They are a fun way to share information about yourself and post pictures but they can be dangerous for kids, including teens.

About MySpace
MySpace allows you or your child to create a place for you to share what you are thinking with the world and photos. It is very popular with kids and most kids have a page.

MySpace Requirements
All that is required to get a MySpace page is an email address to sign up. You also need to certify that you are at least 14 years of age. Most kids just say that they are 14 if they aren't. MySpace does not want children under the age of 14 and if they find out they are they will discontinue the service. MySpace tries to police it but they have no way of knowing if their member is actually 14. If you discover that your child has one, you can ask to have your child's MySpace page removed.

Privacy and MySpace
Most kids make their MySpace page private where only friends they designate are allowed to see their page. This is safer than allowing it to be private but it also makes it difficult for parents to keep track of what they are posting and most kids don't want their parents to see what they are posting.

What Is Posted On MySpace
MySpace makes it easy to post all about you. The first thing you do is post a profile with your name, town, interests, school, sexual orientation, books and movies you like, who your heroes are and much more. A popular topic is to post questionaires on the MySpace page so they can share very specific information about themselves. Your child can easily put everything about them online.

The Dangers of MySpace
Your child can easily post enough information about themselves to be abducted. An online predator looking at your child's page has enough information to arrive at your door or the playground that your child frequents. You must teach your child the dangers of posting too much information and you must follow up to make sure they aren't posting too much information.

Another problem is that children tend to post things that should never be put in print. They say things like they want to burn down the school or they want to kill so-and-so with not literally meaning it but threats like that could be taken seriously.

MySpace is for kids over 14 years of age. There is sexually explicit information on the site posted by other users and the profile questions that users create is geared towards adults.

How To Protect Your Child
The main safety rule is that they must not post too much identifying information especially their last name. You should not trust your child to post too much information though even if you speak to them daily about it because children always think that it will never happen to them and they aren't in danger. Besides, their friends tell them that it is safe and often children think their friends are more Internet savvy than you. If your child wants to have a MySpace page you need to have access to it. When you explain to them that there are very real dangers, you can make the rule that if they want to use the computer, they will have to share the access information. If you feel that you can't do this, you can install monitoring software to see what they are seeing without them knowing it. You can also install filtering softwarethat will stop them from visiting the site.

Have you ever been on a friend’s MySpace.com profile page where there are all kinds of cool pictures, images, graphics and colors? Did such a page inspire you to make your personal profile page something that’s not so drab and generic? Have you ever thought about the process that it must take in order to get some of these really intense and detailed profiles up and running? Do you think that the owners of these pages have way too much time on their hands? The necessary course of action is nothing more than a little bit of thought and a few clicks of the mouse.

Long gone are the days of needing a master’s degree in computer science for adding a bit of individuality to a personal page on a website like MySpace.com. Well, that’s not exactly true. Let’s just say that you don’t have to have a master’s degree, but someone else probably has had an education in computers. There are many legitimate websites and companies that have created the complicated computer language for you add some spice to your space. All you need to do once you’ve decided on a layout is click, copy and paste!

It works like this: Each layout that you find will have a code attached to it. The code will be pretty detailed and long as it is written in a computer language. You’ll need to copy (CTR+C) and paste (CTR+V) the code into the “About Me” section of your MySpace profile page, after you’ve logged in, of course.

So, what sort of layout are you looking for? The possibilities are seemingly endless. Solid colors, funky patterns and fantasy-ish designs are just a few of the available layouts for you to add to your profile page on MySpace.com. Classic and contemporary movies make for some great layouts, and quite a bit of conversation, too. Your favorite female celebrity or hottest guy in the movies as a background or layout will add a smile to your face whenever you log on.

As you get more familiar with the process, you may want to add an extra-personal touch, like maybe a daily joke, look-a-like avatar, or glitter graphic that twinkles before your eyes. Traditional ways of generating traffic to a website have revolved around PPC advertising, search engine optimization, reciprocal linking, content generation, and a wide variety of other means. As the internet continues to evolve another form has made waves in the online world: Myspace. Myspace is categorized as a “social networking site.” What that means it is it is a gathering center for almost everyone. People find old high school friends, arrange for potential dates, communicate with friends, and most importantly to those in the SEO and web analytics fields they use myspace to promote a product or service. Although advertising businesses is technically against myspace’s terms and conditions (they would rather you pay to advertise) hundreds of thousands of businesses and bands reside on myspace. With reports of 100 million users of myspace the potential for promotion is incredible. Myspace, for the first time ever directed more traffic to online retailers last month than yahoo did according to hitwise. That was just from paid advertising, not from individual users of the site.

As an example of the power of myspace we had a staffer create a myspace profile with her name, a few pictures, and a description of the company she works for, us. She added her friends, and then added some friends of her friends. Within four days she had over 650 friends that generated hundreds of hits onto our main website. At the time of this article she was upto 3000 friends in two weeks of Myspace membership. Other myspace members had tens of thousands of friends, and used the myspace bulletin feature to send traffic to events that they were planning, or invitations for their “friends” to visit their website for a new promotion. A Myspace Sidebar - It’s Simple Using DIV

How would you like to have a column on the left side of your Myspace profile in which you could place anything you like? Even better, what if this column was never covered when some one’s browser window is smaller than the Myspace layout “grid”? Well the solution is much simpler than you might think, and I am going to give it to you right now. I’m not going in depth into the workings of CSS or the Myspace structure. There are a lot of great CSS tutorial sites out there to learn the deeper and more complex aspects of modifying your Myspace layout and Myspace background. Just type Myspace tutorials into Google. Here, I am just going to give you the code and brief explanations of what it does.

First, just to make sure you understand what I am speaking of, visit my Myspace layout at profile sbccjohn (I would recommend opening a new tab/window for reference). Notice the grey box in the upper left corner (I left it plain so it would stand out). Now make your browser window smaller using the resize corner and notice how the banner ad and table stops when it gets near the box. I’ll show you why and how it does this.

Let’s dive right into this Myspace layout modification by looking at the code.

Here is the code that actually builds the box seen in the sidebar. Place this CSS code wherever you put your own modification code. I prefer the top of the “About Me” edit box:

You can put whatever your want here. Even aligned images:

There is only one line of code needed to keep the sidebar from being covered by the rest of the Myspace layout, it’s in bold below. If you already have CSS modifications using the ‘body’ tag you just need to add the line to the current code. Otherwise you can add the entire style block below the div code listed above; just be careful not to place it inside another style block. Here is the code:

margin-left:155px;
}

That is all you need to build the sidebar for your Myspace layout.

The first block of code tells the browser to create a block of space, 15 pixels from the top and 7 pixels from the left, 150 pixels wide and 400 pixels high, with a 1 pixel border that is black and solid, and to not put any space between the edge and inside content (padding) or around the outside (margin), and make the background color grey.

The second block of code tells the browser to keep the entire Myspace layout at least 155 pixels from the left. It’s important to note the relationship between the margin-left in this block of code and the width in the previous code. You need to keep margin-left larger than width or the Myspace layout might cover your sidebar in smaller browser windows.

Now you can explore with different combinations of colors, widths, heights, borders and position. For example you can have the sidebar start lower by changing top to 100px. You can even add a background image using the same methods you add a Myspace background image. Enjoy the new layout!

MySpace is Dead. Long Live MySpace

Just recently, the Washington Post ran an article proclaiming the death of MySpace. The kids are moving on, claims the article. High school students, the ultimate arbiters of what's cool and what's not, are looking to Facebook for their social networking fix. MySpace is so last season. Facebook, which recently opened its membership beyond its previous college student only base, is the new hotness.

I'm just going to have to take their word for it, I suppose. I haven't been a teen in a few years and was never cool anyway. I don't have a MySpace and never will. (Sorry to all my friends who can't get a hold of me because of it. My cell phone still works! No, I still don't have text messaging.)

The gloom and doom of the article predicts dire things for Google who shelled out quite a bit to get their name on MySpace (they provide search) and who spent even more to acquire the currently white-hot YouTube. So if MySpace is losing the teen market, can YouTube be far behind?

Probably not. Even if the anecdotal evidence of one class of high school students can accurately chart the course of a web site with millions of users, this is what kids do after all. Popularity is a short-lived virtue among the teen set. Eventually someone will come up with a newer, shinier, edgy YouTube (or at least something that appears to be newer and shinier) and the teen market will move.

However, before you play taps for MySpace or YouTube, consider that according to an October fifth ComScore study, most of MySpace's users are over 35. At a guess I would say that YouTube's members are probably around the same age brackets. Those users aren't going to be as fickle as the teenagers (and not all teenagers will be as fickle as others.) Even if the buzz is going elsewhere, the disposable income isn't.

What the recent studies are really showing is that the population of these sites is becoming more like the general population. Less youth, more adults and that's just what happens as sites gain in popularity. Things mature and they become reflective of the world around them.

The real key here is not for advertisers to give up on MySpace, but to be sure they know who their ads are reaching. You've heard the saying before "I know that half of my advertising is wasted but I don't know which half."

What it's not is buying into doomsday articles that purport to tell the future of an industry still growing up. So what if MySpace is dead to the teenagers? If you're desperate for the eyes of the 14-17 year olds, MySpace might not be your best bet. Throwing your money at a target audience that isn't listening or present is wasting money. Do your research, know where to find your audience and aim your campaigns accordingly. Sometimes that's a simple task--you're going to find more women at HGTV.com than you will men. Sometimes it's a matter of watching the market.

Of course, we'll have to wait for a real study for that. Or ask a few more high school students for their opinions.

According to Alexa Internet, it is currently the world's fourth most popular English-language website, the sixth most popular website in any language and the third most popular website in the United States, though it has topped the chart on various weeks (note it is possible that other websites have a greater number of unique visitors). The service has gradually gained more popularity than similar websites to achieve nearly 80 percent of visits to online social networking websites. It has become an increasingly influential part of contemporary popular culture, especially in English speaking countries. The company employs 300 staff, is owned by News Corporation, and does not disclose revenues or profits separately from News Corporation. With the 100 millionth account being created on August 9, 2006 and a news story claiming 106 million accounts on September 8, 2006, the site reportedly attracts new registrations at a rate of 230,000 per day.

Before the creation of the current social networking website, the myspace.com domain name was already registered in 1998 to a San Francisco-based online storage and file sharing firm. Registration was free and users were able to obtain a small disk quota which would gradually increase if they referred new members to the site. Due to slow service and a lack of revenue, the original website shut down and sold all of its users' information in 2001.

The current MySpace service was founded in July 2003 by Tom Anderson (an alumnus of both the University of California, Berkeley and the University of California, Los Angeles), the current president and CEO, Chris DeWolfe (a graduate of University of Southern California's Marshall School of Business), and a small team of programmers. It was partially owned by Intermix Media, which was bought in July 2005 for US$580 million by Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation (the parent company of Fox Broadcasting and other media enterprises).Of this amount, approx. US$327mm has been attributed to the value of MySpace according to the financial advisor fairness opinion.

The corporate history of MySpace as well as the status of Tom Anderson as a MySpace founder has been a matter of some public dispute.

In January 2006, Fox announced plans to launch a UK version of MySpace in a bid to "tap into the UK music scene" which they have since done (see MySpace International). They also plan to launch in China and possibly other countries.

1.You can listen to full tracks by each band.
2.There's no need to find and navigate complex Flash-based artist websites.
